Goal. Get a new user to the actions that predict they’ll stick (create a project, invite a teammate, make a first purchase), and only nudge them on the steps they haven’t finished. Who it’s for. Web2 SaaS and apps. Outcome to move. Activation rate: the share of new users who complete your key setup actions.

Prerequisites

Build it

1

Send an event for each activation step

Fire an event as the user completes each key action, for example project_created, teammate_invited, first_purchase.
Other languages follow the same shape, see the API Reference.
2

Nudge only the unfinished steps

Start the series from signup, then at each step branch on whether the matching event has fired:welcome → wait 1 day → did they create a project? (no → send "Create your first project") → wait 2 days → invited a teammate? (no → send "Better with your team")A Branch reads what the contact has done, so finished steps are skipped and nobody is nagged about something they’ve already done.
3

Celebrate completion

When the last step fires, send a short “you’re all set” and stop. Tag these contacts as Activated so you can measure and segment on it later.
4

Activate and publish.

Both are required.

Test

Walk your own account through the steps out of order and confirm the series only prompts the ones you skipped, and stops when you finish.

Measure

  • Activation rate over time.
  • Step drop-off: which action loses the most people, so you know where to focus the product, not just the email.
  • Time to activate.

Variations

  • Role-based paths. An admin and a solo user need different checklists, branch on a role attribute.
  • In-product plus email. Pair the emails with in-app prompts for users who are active in the app.
